3D printing has revolutionized manufacturing. Printing metals, however, is not a simple as printing plastics. Metal printing requires the use of powder which is hazardous and requires special equipment to handle. Instead of powder, this technology uses a wire-feedstock, made possible through improved welding technology that can match the precision of powder-based printers.

These researchers have developed a modified plasma welding method (that is, welding using an electrical arc impinged by gas flow) whereby the metal wire is fed through the cathode. This novel approach allows for greater control, and therefore high accuracy welding. Weld-lines of 0.5mm in diameter could already be demonstrated and further precision increases are possible. Repeated welding through this method can build up complex structures, just like a 3D printer.
The critical point of difference between this technology and other metal printers is the complete removal of powder. This printer is small enough to fit into an office and designed with user-friendliness in mind. Metal powder is difficult to handle and hazardous to human health, meaning it requires expensive equipment and PPE, specialized training and a lot of dedicated space. All of these factors add up in terms of costs, and so this alternative technology can bring down the cost of metal printing in general. The size of the printer would be around the size of a refrigerator, meaning it can fit into a small business space. The printer is ideal for small to medium enterprises in creative industries, such as custom jewelers, artists and designers.
