Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, hand sanitizer has become an essential everyday item. There may be many brands of hand sanitizer now available, but not all are created equally. Aside from the mentioned features that often make hand sanitizers unpleasant to use, there is reason to be concerned about the ingredients in them as well. The flooding of the market has led to many sanitizers containing toxic ingredients such as methanol and, in fact, many products have had to be recalled for this reason. As an alternative, homemade disinfectant recipes using essential oils abound on the internet, but these are also problematic. Essential oils, when used incorrectly, can also cause skin irritation and, more importantly, homemade hand sanitizer has not been tested to be effective as an antimicrobial agent. These disinfectant products have been formulated to have an effective and safe combination of natural essential oils, as well as pharmaceutical agents to give a soft texture and ensure the shelf-life of the product. They have been rigorously tested for antibacterial and antiviral activity, as well as tested on real users. Feedback from these users has shown no skin irritation, as well as extreme satisfaction with the texture and feel of the product. The product comes in multiple forms – either a gel or liquid, in two different formulations of varying alcohol content, and also a hand towel version.
